Description
I wanted to add washes into a painting and see how they would interact with the marks. I went with cobalt blue. I also wanted to experiment with marks that were interrupted by the edges of the canvas. I had thought I was done with this painting pretty quickly. The washes looked good. I had what I was trying to accomplish. But the painting wasn’t great. I left it alone for a week and finally built up the courage to hit it again. It became a mess and for a couple of weeks I wished I never touched it. I kept at it continuing the process of responding to the marks. I added a layer of white emulsion to allow me to continue with a canvas that already had oil and water based media. Someone told me when I was a kid, “Good is the enemy of great”. That saying has always stuck with me and that’s what this painting is about to me. I refused to abandon it until I loved it. There are ups and downs in hockey and life, but never settle for something you think is just good enough.
