Description
This painting was a direct response to Composition #3 which is why they are displayed as a diptych on my living room wall. In Composition #3 I had struck different locations of the canvas with essentially the same motion. In this painting I varied the form of my hits so I could explore different types of marks. I decided in this one to keep my legs on a constant plane while distorting the position of my upper body. I also decided after a few passes with black to introduce white marks into the painting. This thought came from the process of under-painting I had been learning the last couple of years. Once the white marks had brought back the light I was able to go back and strike it with additional black paint. In the end I saw in the painting a tree with what looks like something trying to cut it down. It was a message to me to be fearless and continue to grow. There will always be something trying to cut you down. This is my favorite painting in the collection.
