Description
As so much of this project was experimental and exploratory, I made sure to change one variable at a time in my process. For this composition I stayed with oil paint but used a linen canvas to see if the surface would receive the mark differently. The first mark resembled a stamp. I loved the mark, but it wasn’t sufficient as a composition. I hit it again; a little bit higher this time. Looking at the two marks together made me think of an image I saw of a wall painting in an Egyptian tomb with three vertical figures. I decided to make two more similar overlapping marks on either side of the central figure. I loved the result. I saw “me” hitting “me”. No matter how big or strong you think you are, there is always something that can take you down. A lot of the time it’s yourself. This is how I would proceed going forward. I would make a mark and then respond to that mark on the canvas. There was no predetermined idea or narrative. Something I love about these paintings is that everyone sees something different.
